School on Wheels programs help parents understand what
it means to be an ‘educational advocate’ for their children.
Unfortunately, life on the streets or in a shelter is not easy. There are a lot of systems to navigate, processes to understand and people to work with – all while trying to work several jobs, save money and maintain a family. In 2008, School on Wheels launched a parent advocacy program called “Ignite Learning” that works with parents to equip them with the skills and resources that will allow them to support their children’s academic careers.
Through Ignite Learning, School on Wheels Program Coordinators operate office-hours, which they spend helping parents understand how to best facilitate their child’s education. Among other topics, Coordinators help parents navigate the educational system, understand policies such as the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act and become an educationally focused parent to ensure their child’s academic success.
