STATISTICS FOR THE HOMELESS POPULATION IN INDIANAPOLIS ARE STARTLING:
• The average age of a homeless person in Indianapolis is nine years old.
• Children make up 30% of the City’s homeless population.
• Several Indianapolis Public Schools report student turnover rates greater than 100% from the beginning to the end of each school year.
• Homeless children are twice as likely to repeat a grade in school
• Homeless children are four times more likely to have learning disabilities than their non-homeless peers.
• Approximately 2,500 children are homeless in Indianapolis each year.
Clearly, there is demonstrated community need for the School on Wheels program. The shelters and schools that currently partner with School on Wheels are pleased with the valuable tutoring service that we have provided at no cost. We have a proven track record and we will continue providing services as long as there are homeless children in Indianapolis.
