Basic Understanding of Literacy by Grade

Kindergarten: letter recognition, Dolch words, color words, capitalize first word in a sentence

1st Grade: Dolch words*, retell a story, describe characters in a story, print all upper- and lower-case letters, capitalize dates and peoples names

2nd Grade: Dolch words, nouns, verbs, adjectives, answer who/what/where/ when/how based on a text, acknowledge different points of view of characters, speaking in different voices for each character

3rd Grade: vocabulary words, paragraph structure (beginning, middle, end), understand meaning of common prefixes/suffixes, capitalize holidays/product names/ geographic locations, apostrophes in common contractions, use quotation marks in dialogue

4th Grade: vocabulary words, know functions of nouns/verbs/adjectives/adverbs, similes, metaphors, antonyms/synonyms

5th Grade: vocabulary words, know functions of conjunctions/prepositions/interjections, quotations marks or italics for titles, compare/contrast characters or stories

6th Grade: vocabulary words, use intensive pronouns (myself/ourselves), recognize/correct vague pronouns, vary sentence patterns in writing

7th/8th Grade: cite evidence in text to support analysis, in informative text determine an author’s point of view or purpose, analyze how elements of a story interact (e.g. how setting shapes the plot), maintain a formal style in writing

9th/10th Grade: begin using SAT vocabulary words, practice writing using formal style

11th/12th: SAT vocabulary words, practice writing using formal style

*Dolch words are high frequency site words that, if recognized, increase reading fluency*
