With one hour a week, you can impact two lives – yours and theirs.
Please note: We have currently placed the appropriate amount of tutors for the number of students we have enrolled in our program at this time. We will be training and placing more volunteers starting in June and continuing throughout the summer. In the meantime, click here to learn about other volunteer opportunities that directly impact our students. Please check back in June to learn more about tutoring options. For questions or more information contact Samantha Breeling by email or at 317-202-9100.
Volunteering as a tutor for a homeless child is a meaningful way to impact your community. School on Wheels is the only agency in Indianapolis to provide tutoring and educational mentoring to homeless youth. Since 2001, School on Wheels has mobilized over 1,700 volunteers to tutor over 3,000 school-aged homeless children.
Tutoring with School on Wheels is a semester long commitment that takes only an hour a week. Anybody age 14 & up can tutor on their own and children ages 11-13 can tutor with a parent.
As a tutor, you will:
- Enhance the educational opportunities of homeless children.
- Demonstrate consistency and encouragement by helping a child to understand why their education is not only important, but possible.
- Receive a free tutor-training as well as guidance from an on-site School on Wheels staff member during every tutoring session.
- Become the heart and soul of School on Wheels!
